Sail away from the safe harbor

I completely understand the desire to be stable and safe, tucked away comfortably in a small familiar environment. I have maintained a sense of stability throughout my life with a solid foundation built on love, family, and faith. At the same time, however, I have sought out new adventures and challenges along the way. Perhaps I can best describe myself as a down-to-earth Midwest gal with an innate need to be progressive, avoid stagnancy, and continuously grow, even if that causes some growing pains in the process. These two desires for stability and growth may seem as if they are on opposite ends of the spectrum; for me, they are not. I try to find ways to make them blend.

After ten years of adulthood, I’ve had some “aha moments,” as Oprah would eloquently say. One of these moments is fresh in my mind, as in I just woke up and need to make sure to record it so I don’t forget it –kind of fresh.…

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” (Anonymous)

Whether it is a geographical move, obtaining an advanced degree, or new career path/promotion, I find it is important to balance that natural craving for comfort with a willingness to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow into your best self. Regardless of the outcome of the risk, what you’ll discover along the way is priceless.

So sail away from the safe harbor…
